2011 Project GiveBack Children’s Easter Celebration

The day started with rainy dreary skies and a chilling temperature.  DC’s favorite weatherman Chuck Bell who proudly displays a University of Oklahoma Coffee mug on his desk said that it would start out rainy, but that there was a possibility that we could have spurts of sunshine throughout the day.  As usual the Project GiveBack Annual Children’s Easter Celebration was to go on rain or shine.  As fate would have it, the skies cleared and it turned out to be an amazing day.  Around noon children began to trickle in to the Children of Mine Community Center in Southeast Washington DC.  They were greeted by a thick white smoke coming from Rick Mclean’s brand new grill.  The children were treated to hamburgers and hot dogs fresh off the grill.  Once everyone was full, it was time for a discussion of the Christian meaning of Easter by Project GiveBack founder Ransom Miller, III.  After that, the hunt was on for eggs.  The children were separated by age and the hunt was on.  After the hunt, the children were split into four teams for the egg and spoon relay races.  The older children served as team captains and they were asked to come up with team names.  Team PaidVille, Team LoLo, Team Eddie, and Team Extreme Dynamite competed for ribbons.  A very competitive hoola hoop contest went down to the wire.  The day ended with the distribution of prizes and goodie bags.  Project Coordinator Dee Edwards was meticulous in her planning for the event.  After years of successful events, she has this program down a science.  “It was really rewarding to see the older children who have participated in the program since its inception come back and participate as helpers” said Dee.
