Project GiveBack is a grassroots community service organization
based in Washington, DC. Over the past 13 years we have focused
on uplifting the community by orchestrating events such as the Annual
Thanksgiving Food Distribution, Children's Toy Drive, Children's
Easter Celebration, and the Computer Sponsor Program.
After years of dedicated service to the community, we asked ourselves
what we could do to touch the youth of our community. We came up
with a program that would provide an interactive platform to inform
and educate young students about the three branches of the United
States Government - Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. A focus
on local and state government will be added in the future.
The Political Exposure - Spotlight on Capitol Hill Tour was the
initial activity of Project GiveBack's effort to connect with students
of various backgrounds. Our goal with this innovative program is
to expose the students to a wide range of experiences that will
provoke career aspirations, social ingenuity, and creative genius.
On September 6, 2007 we moved aggressively towards our goal of touching
our youth.
The day began with student registration at Howard University's
Crampton Auditorium. After a quick bus ride we received an indebt
tour of the Rayburn Office Building provided by staffers for Michigan
Senator Carl Levin. We made
our way through underground tunnels of the United
State Capitol Subway System to the U.S. Capitol. Once we arrived
at the Capitol, we were treated to an insiders view of the Old Senate
Chamber and the National
Statuary Hall where we tested the whisper perfect acoustics
and saw statutes of great men from each state in the union. We also
toured the Rotunda
and viewed all of the larger than life artwork. We were intrigued
by the artwork by Chapman, Powell and others, but paid specific
attention to Trumbull who according to our tour guide has a knack
for conspicuously placing himself in history (still trying to verify
that). I must say that Constantino
Brumidi sparked the most controversy among the group with his
true fresco Apotheosis
of Washington. One of the students questioned the name of the
beautiful 3D painting, which is translated to the raising of a person
to the rank of a God. The mix of George Washington being raised
to God status, Greek Mythology (Neptune/Poseidon), Money, Science,
War, Agriculture and Mechanics (which was all depicted in the painting)
challenged some of our religious positions and sparked a fairly
complicated debate.
After lunch in the beautiful Upper Senate Park we convened for a
panel discussion by Senate staffers. They fielded some very tough
questions from the students and shared some stories of success and
encouragement for the students. The following are some of the staffers
who served on the panel:
Michelle Van Brakle, Fellow to Senator Edward M. Kennedy
Aaron Jenkins, Legislative Correspondent to Senator John Kerry
Lindsay Ross, Legislative Correspondent to Senator John Kerry
Veronica M. Gillespie, Elections Counsel - Committee on Rules and
Administration
Erek L. Barron, Counsel to Senator Joseph R. Biden, Jr.
Students from the following schools participated:
Bell Multicultural High School - Washington, DC
The Chelsea School - Silver Spring, Maryland
Hine Middle School - Washington, DC
Eleanor Roosevelt High School - Greenbelt, Maryland
Sherwood High School - Silver Spring, Maryland
St. Stephens/St. Agnes - Alexandria, Virginia
Briggs Chaney Middle School - Silver Spring, Maryland
Project GiveBack would like to thank the Dean Charles Gibbs and
his planning committee from Howard University for coordinating this
outstanding event.
